On July 9 my co-workers and I were directly told–in person–that a decision re: our new manager would be announced on August 2 or 3 via an in-person office visit from upper management. As of noon today, that visit has been cancelled (via email) with no explanation or further information. It has been 8 months since the vacancy was announced. 7.5 months since the posting closed. 6.5 months since 3 rounds of interviews…and I’ve lost count of the postponements.
My nature is to pick up the phone and professionally inquire about the delay but I recognize that may not be a career enhacing move. I’m going to be still and quiet. There aren’t really any words for me to express how crazy it makes me to be told something and then have no follow through…and anyone who knows me will tell you that goes for anything and not just something that impacts me directly. It is what I do for others and desperately want in return.
I don’t want to be a whiner and I know I am very fortunate—and this will not be a distraction from our debt reduction journey–but holy cow I’m irritated!
Born and raised in Texas. I’ve at least driven through every state in the US courtesy of a roadtrip loving Dad.
I’m single with two children and a good parenting relationship with their father.
I am a “life is just half full of funny” kinda gal. Humor is my saving grace and I am thankful for it every single day. I have a strong Catholic faith and am thankful for that foundation.
I read a lot for a living but still enjoy a good book. I love biographies but in recent years have found the need for fun fictional books–sadly, for a long time I just didn’t enjoy fiction!
I love live theatre of any kind–from local productions to Broadway.
I love to scrapbook and pride myself in my kids’ albums.
I love being a mom but also love my career. I’m blessed to have found a balance allowing me to be at everything my kids need and want me to be at–while also having a career.

Totally understand. I was informed I’d be promoted in the last job that I had and that I just needed to hold on for budgeting to go through. That promotion would have helped me get into meetings that I needed to be a part of but could only get in to if I held a certain title. 1 year later, I was told they couldn’t get the position approved but if I just held on a little while longer (another 6 months or so), I would get the title. I decided to leave the job for other reasons but this definitely factored into my unhappiness. After I left, my vacant position was posted AS THE HIGHER POSITION!! So, I hear you!!
E! Do we work for the same company?! I keep wondering what I am supposed to take from this b/c I do believe we are to take something from every experience. As I said in a previous post, there are 3 of us in the running in my office which only adds to the stress and tension. Terrible really…
Wow, Claire! Your situation would drive me absolutely crazy too… and it seems more than a little unprofessional on your employer’s part to keep stringing you and your co-workers along! It’s good to hear that you are able to keep your frustrations contained at work and not let it sidetrack your debt goals, I don’t think I would be able to handle the situation as gracefully as you are!
I didn’t have such a graceful day today. I didn’t call anyone and I didn’t send any crazy emails but I was definitely not doing as well as I was when I wrote that post last night!
I would be frustrated too. I also would ask myself how the company is doing financially, is there any chance it is on the block to be acquired by another company, is a reorganization likely underway, how am I and my coworkers being treated otherwise, etc.? Only you know if this is a deal breaker or not.
I think Juhli is on the right track. There’s probably a reorganization or cutback in the works.
As a major insurance company things appear to be financially stable but we all know how those appearances can be facades. I would be more concerned about this possiblity but for the history with getting positions filled—they often taken forever.
Glad you can at least sit still and be quiet. I am one to make noise when people are doing things that should be done differently. Hopefully they will tell you soon who got the job!
If your irritation is purely personal, just bite the bullet. If it’s professional, and impacting the office, you could try thinking of what a leader would do to mitigate that. Chat (not gossip!) with the others you know are in the running. Do the manage from below thing.
Oh I absolutely went to the others right away b/c I couldn’t deal. We have continued to talk throughout and that seems to be beneficial to all of us. I do like your point here re: personal vs. professional. I’m going to spend some time thinking about that b/c from a leadership perspective, the office is really in a tough spot. Thanks for that perspective! I love my readers!
