I’ve been a bit nervous about our missing rent safety net. On our own, we’d be fine. Add a kid, daycare, and extra health insurance and suddenly ‘fine’ isn’t the word I’d use to describe our upcoming budget. I expressed my concern to my husband who replied, ‘Everything will turn out.’

Yes, he’s the financial Bob Marley in our relationship. He never gets worried.

I clicked through our spreadsheets trying to make 1 + 1 = 47 but even with today’s modern math, it wasn’t happening. As I was about to lose my sanity, my husband strolled home from work. ‘Guess who’s up for a raise?’ he asked with a grin.

I stared at him.

He paused then said, ‘ME!’

I continued to stare in silence.

‘Hon?’ he asked.

More silence and a confused stare.

He snapped in front of my face. ‘Anyone home?’ he laughed.

‘Didn’t you JUST get one?!?’ I asked.

‘Well, yeah. But it’s time for another according to my boss’ he said proudly.

Have I worked for the government so long that I forgot what it’s like to get a raise? Man, I miss my private sector job.

Raises are supposed to be handed out in the next 30 – 60 days at his office.

Did you hear that? That, my friends, was a sigh of relief.

  1. Mike Dunham responded:

Congratulations! And no, raises don’t just happen in the private sector these days, either. I haven’t had a raise in years.

  2. Money Beagle responded:

Same with me. I haven’t had a raise since 2008 but I’m thinking something is bound to happen this year. I hope!

  3. Vicki responded:

    That is great news!

  4. Kevin Yu responded:

    Wow that’s awesome, great job!

  5. Mrs. Pancakes responded:

I just found your blog…it’s awesome and i am so inspired by your debt payment. My hubby and i are where you are and i am excited to start the journey sometime next year!

  6. Just Me Again responded:

When I read about your DH’s recent graduation, I was hoping that something like this would happen for him too! Because right after my DH graduated with his master’s degree, his employer suddenly handed him a 25% raise, even though he had just gotten nice 8% raise a few months before…and on top of the fact that they had just paid for 100% of his tuition, books and fees.

Let’s hear it for employers who truly appreciate an educated workforce and are willing to pay for what that brings to their company!
