A reader sent me a tip about a CNN article that discusses unusual ways to make money. While I’m not so sure about two of the suggestions, the one about selling your hair caught my eye. Yes, there are people out there willing to buy hair and sometimes will shell out $2K!

With the economy squeezing the budgets of more Americans, some people are looking for creative ways to pay their monthly bills. Selling hair on the Internet is just one of those unusual methods.

I doubt I would do it. I have too many gray hairs showing up now LOL. But it is a very unusual way to make money and it was interesting to look at the hair that has sold (the site is TheHairTrader.com).

The other ideas were ones I discussed before: becoming a lab rat and selling gold at a gold party. If we had gold to sell I’d probably be all over that one. But I am not a jewelry collector.

Thanks Dawn for the tip!

I think I would have trouble selling my hair. After donating it several times to Locks of Love it’s hard to imagine a better purpose for my unneeded tresses. Come to think of it, the first time I donated my hair several years ago was right around the time I couldn’t make make my rent by TWO DOLLARS. Even if I’d known I could sell it then, I’m sure I probably wouldn’t have.

The trouble with donating/selling hair in North America is that most people these days chemically treat their hair. Dyes, perms, relaxers, heat drying/straightening – all of these can render hair unusable for the charities (they just sell that hair, they don’t use it to make wigs) or undesirable for buyers (they just won’t buy it). It’s really only useful to sell “virgin” (aka untreated) hair.
Even then I’d pick a charity with a better reputation than LoL – such as the Pantene Beautiful Lengths one.

I started making Diaper and Towel cakes for baby/wedding showers and weddings. It all snowballed from one gift and has made a nice little side income when things have been tight.

They are. You can really get inventive when you need to. And being a man with grey hair, who’d want my hair!

  5. Jen responded:

My hair is “virgin” hair – I never dye it or perm it. And, after it reaches a certain length, I don’t even blow dry it. But, I don’t have the patience to grow it out long enough to donate it, and I’m assuming it has to be fairly long in order to sell it. It’s too bad we didn’t know about donating hair when I was a child. I had hair down to my waist, and then we chopped it off to the shoulder. That was the last time I had hair long enough to donate.
