Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to start finalizing my New Year’s resolutions. I haven’t even checked how we did with the ones I made for 2008. I’ll probably see how we did this weekend. As for 2009, I haven’t put much thought into our financial goals. I think I’m still amazed that 2008 is almost over.

If you are having a hard time figuring out where to start with some financial resolutions for 2009, you may want to check out this article that was sent to me by a reader.

Suze Orman’s Financial Tips

Suze Orman is working with Oprah to help everyone get a fresh financial start. She will be on Oprah in the beginning of January as part of her Best Life series. I can’t seem to find the exact date she’ll be on, so you’ll have to check local listings. If I happen to find it – I’ll let you know.

In the article above, Suze has some solid tips. I especially like her #1 suggestion: No Blame, No Shame. I agree to have that one as the beginning tip. It was hard to wipe our emotions away from our past financial mistakes, but it’s something we definitely had to do to move forward. Yeah, we screwed up and got buried in credit card debt. But we learned from our mistakes and moved on.

Thanks Beverly for sending me the article!

UPDATE: Beverly found the complete schedule for Oprah’s Best Life series:

Suze will be on Thursday, January 8, 2009.

Oh! Thanks for the info on Suze Orman being on Oprah in January. I’ll make sure to record those shows. Suze Orman is great..

  2. Mar responded:

Kind of off topic, but am I the only one who can’t stand watching Oprah’s show? I’m not sure why, but it really makes me want to drink – heavily – and I don’t drink at all (because if I’m going to waste that much money and those many calories, it’s going to be on CHOCOLATE!)

As far as New Year’s resolutions, I’m making a budget and STICKING to it! Uh, yeah, we’ll see how that goes, but you never know!

  3. Tricia responded:

Mar – I am not a regular Oprah watcher, but I try to tune in if there is someone interesting on.

  4. Cyndy responded:

I’m asking for help. My husband & I are, I think, drowning in debt & this is about the worst time in our lives for this to happen. I just celebrated my 65th birthday & he is 62. He wants to retire soon & I don’t blame him because he’s worked hard all his life.

We have both secured & unsecured debt. We both want to keep our house & that gives us more debt to repay than just the house payment. Other lenders have tied out house to whatever we borrowed from them. I’m afraid we’re stuck with those bills. But we also have almost $20,000 of credit card debt.

Would you recommend taking bankruptcy on the credit cards only & can we do that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
