It’s that time of year for some New Year’s resolutions. I can’t seem to get past one…pay off the last bit of our credit card debt. So, that will be our single financial goal for 2009. Anything above and beyond that will be icing on the cake.

We have another resolution that will affect our cash flow. Both my husband and I will be giving up the soft drinks once our current supply is out. We will save money by doing that, but we may use the savings there to go towards healthier food. I’m still looking into that, though.

As I mentioned earlier, I am excited for 2009. I am hopeful that it will be a great year for us.

Happy New Year everyone!

With a minute to spare, I posted our financial goals for 2008 right before the switch to 2008. So…how did we do?

For our credit card debt, we wanted to pay off at least $10,000 more. That would put us in a good position to meet our goal date of May 2009. How much did we pay? $10,965. We exceeded our goal.

For our savings, we wanted to beef it up to $2,500 (although I noted it would be nice to get it to $5,000). I won’t have our final amount until interest is added in, but we have over $3,700 in our savings so we met that goal as well.

I have a feeling it will be down to the wire again this year to post our 2009 financial goals. The only thing I can think about is getting our credit card debt finally paid off. We are so close now…I can taste it!

To say goodbye to 2008, I really wanted to hit our debt hard. Thanks to some things lining up properly, we were able to pay enough towards our debt to get under the $6K mark. Our credit card debt now stands at $5,999. I’m pleased. Very pleased.

I haven’t talked about our budding business recently because for a while there, things went stagnant. I have been busy dealing with family issues (related to a medical issue) so I wasn’t doing my part. I’m not the best at multi-tasking. I prefer to focus on one thing and the business wasn’t the most important thing the past few months. Family comes first. Now that I have my bearings with the family issue, I can get back to the business.

I have very high hopes for 2009. I’m actually very excited for the new year. I think it’s our year to really shine. We should have our credit card debt paid off and if all goes well we may have our highest annual income yet in 2009. Yep, I’m excited!

We had an ambitious budget of $150 for Christmas this year. In early December, it became clear that we were going to go over that budget. Either unexpected things came up or I forget about people to buy for. I am not the best budgeter in the world, that’s for sure.

I tallied up our Christmas spending, and it came to $250. We were $100 over budget. For clarification, that spending does not include any gifts purchased from gift money received. The spending there is the money we spent out of pocket for gifts. Even though we went over, I think we did pretty well. Putting more thought into gifts paid off, especially with our son. We bought him educational toys and he loves them! Mom and dad love playing with them too!

All in all, Christmas was very practical this year and our family is set now with proper winter gear to handle our cold winters. Our son is always set, but mom and dad are now set too. It’s time to get outside more and do some family snowshoeing. We are excited about that. Now we need a nice winter day where we are all off work/school! That is one downfall of having both my husband and I working. All three of us rarely have a day off together now. We are working on that, though.

As for the blown budget, I plan on trying to sell a few more things and spending less money in January to make up for it. It looks like both my husband and I are going to give up soft drinks (again) for health reasons as part of our New Year’s resolutions. That will easily save over $50/month right there. Yes, we like our soda (caffeine!). There are other expenses we are talking about too, but we haven’t made a decision on yet. Cable is one thing on the chopping block as we speak.

According to a press release on Oprah.com, Suze Orman is launching her new book, Suze Orman’s 2009 Action Plan, the day she is on the Oprah show (which is scheduled January 8, 2009). It looks like the book will be available as a free eBook to download from Oprah’s site for a week. The press release is dated December 15th, so things could change. Hopefully it doesn’t!

Thanks again to Beverly for the head’s up!!

Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to start finalizing my New Year’s resolutions. I haven’t even checked how we did with the ones I made for 2008. I’ll probably see how we did this weekend. As for 2009, I haven’t put much thought into our financial goals. I think I’m still amazed that 2008 is almost over.

If you are having a hard time figuring out where to start with some financial resolutions for 2009, you may want to check out this article that was sent to me by a reader.

Suze Orman’s Financial Tips

Suze Orman is working with Oprah to help everyone get a fresh financial start. She will be on Oprah in the beginning of January as part of her Best Life series. I can’t seem to find the exact date she’ll be on, so you’ll have to check local listings. If I happen to find it - I’ll let you know.

In the article above, Suze has some solid tips. I especially like her #1 suggestion: No Blame, No Shame. I agree to have that one as the beginning tip. It was hard to wipe our emotions away from our past financial mistakes, but it’s something we definitely had to do to move forward. Yeah, we screwed up and got buried in credit card debt. But we learned from our mistakes and moved on.

Thanks Beverly for sending me the article!

UPDATE: Beverly found the complete schedule for Oprah’s Best Life series:

Best Life Schedule

Suze will be on Thursday, January 8, 2009.

Just wanted to pop in quickly and say Happy Holidays to everyone! We had a splendid day. The only thing that would have made it complete is if we could have spent it with family. Living as far as we do from everyone has its disadvantages. Thank goodness for the telephone to help bridge the gap a little.

We are settling in for the night with a showing of the Incredibles. I have a feeling all of us will retire early tonight. It has been a very exciting day :)
