Our finances have taken another crazy turn. Remember when I said we were going to pay everything off by early/mid 2011?
That was before November 10th.
What changed on November 10th?
We found out about my July 2011 hospital stay…
To have our first baby.
I’m so sorry not to have told you earlier. I wanted to wait until the promotion/raise was settled. The very last thing I wanted to have hanging over my head at the negotiating table was my impending short term disability. Then after the promotion, I didn’t want to say, ‘Hey, thanks for the promotion. Can we talk about temps now? Cause I’m preggo.’
So how will this change things for our debt? We decided to pay regular payments in December and January but after that, we’re pushing the pause button on our debt reduction and stashing cash.
After the baby is born, we are hoping to have enough left over to pay one big payment and kill our remaining debt.
How will the blog change? The most important part, I’ll still work to reduce spending, save money, and smile while doing it. I’ll have a counter that has the amount in our savings. Our debt will stay fairly stagnant but our savings will grow leaps and bounds.
I hope you’ll stay to read the journey. The next five or so months will be an interesting ride.
I am sooooooo very excited.
Beks is a full-time government employee who enjoys blogging late into the night after her four kids have gone to sleep. She’s been married to Chris, her college sweetheart, for 15 years. In 2017, after 3 long years working the Dave Ramsey Baby Steps, they paid off more than $70K and became debt free. When she’s not working or blogging, she’s exploring the great outdoors.
awesome news! Congratulations.
Congratulations!! You’re in such a great place now to welcome a new baby!
Congrats!!
Beks! Great response to the poo-pooers. Eesh.
You deserve all the love and happiness that has been given to you this year. Happy 2011, indeed!
Congrats!
Congratulations!
Babies are like personal finance, there is not one right way – but everyone thinks the way they do it is the right way… Keep an open mind and trust yourselves.
Good times ahead! glad your bro moved out to make way for baby and all the stuff he or she inevitably brings…
I’m pretty sure I found your blog on BBC but not entirely sure. Anyways, just wanted to say congrats! On the baby and the promotion!
@Helen- ever heard of FMLA?? Men get the exact same time off (and often take it) yet you would never say that to a man. Shame on you and get with the 21st century, you are an embarrassment to women.
Congrats! I think you will be an awesome mom
Congratulations! A baby is the most wonderful gift you can receive.
I think you will be a wonderful mother. You know that the best things in life are not things at all – they are love, kindness, compassion, patience. All these are going to be needed to raise your little one.
I also suffered from morning sickness – although all day sickness would describe it better!
Congrats!
Congratulations! Being a mom is the best job in the world, and it does not diminish your value as an employee (in the paid sense) in the least. In fact, it’s the best on-the-job training in multitasking EVAH.
I second the Amazon Mom recommendation. Also, pick up the book “Baby Bargains”. It’s a great resource for the bargain shopper!
And silly me for leaving out the obvious… Congratulations!!
Congrats on your first litle one. Yes, raising a family in this day and age is very expensive. Even if you shop at the discount stores!
Congratulations, Beks! How exciting, except for the morning sickness part! I, too, was taken aback when I read Helen’s comment and thought your response was straight on. Yikes, Helen, you are advocating punishing women in the work force for becoming pregnant and placing no value on their years of service and dedication to their job. Talk about a shameful stance!
Wow! Congratulations! Children are the greatest thing in the world. I’m very happy for you.
congrats!
Might I suggest an alternative to the hospital? A birthing center or a midwife is SUPER less expensive than a hospital, and just if not more knowledgeable. If you’re not having a high risk that is. It’s about a 1/3 of what a hospital birth costs.
Just a suggestion, not pressuring you! Birth is such a happy event, no matter how it happens!
