Odd way to save cash…

by

I wear 6” heels every day to work. Before you jump on me for the future damage to my feet, ankles, and legs, hear me out.

I’m short and my leg to torso proportion closely resembles a crossbred Welsh corgi and a dachshund. I buy petite short pants… and have them hemmed.

Sure, I could ‘accept my God given shape’, ‘celebrate my uniqueness’, and believe all the other feel good sayings my mother told me OR… I could wear really, really, really tall shoes and live in denial.

Denial is the name of my game.

I never thought tall shoes would save me money until my co-workers started to ask me to accompany them to lunch. With the fantastic food offerings of downtown San Diego, it’s impossible to pass up… unless you can’t walk. It’s easy to say no when walking more than three steps causes me to beg God to take me from this earth and save me from pain.

So, I kick off my shoes, put on my slippers, and toast a sandwich.

Before you insult that lady at work with the ridiculous shoes, remember… she may be saving money… or maybe she’s self-conscious about her tiny legs… or maybe it’s both.

Wow! Where do you find 6″ heels? I’m really short as well, so I sympathize. I also have an MIL who can only wear ugly comfort shoes after doing what you are doing now for 30 years. I sincerely hope that is not your fate. And it is a great way to save lunch money. 🙂

You crack me up. If you want to see short, check out Grams. I guess you come by it honestly. Grams

My grandmother wore high heels everyday in her youth. She likes to tell random strangers about her fabulous shoe collection. She is nearing 80 now, and she no longer wears heels. However, she hasn’t experienced any weird or unpleasant effects with regards to her feet. Actually, if she didn’t fall down every time she turned around, she would probably still be wearing them:)

Do the 6″ heels include a platform?

And how do you get around at work all day if you can’t walk more than 3 steps without major pain? (also: related medical bills in the future?)

    Hilarious and yet brilliant!

The only thing I don’t get: If you’re having your pants hemmed anyway, why wear the heels? Or did you mean that, if you didn’t wear the heels, you’d have to get petite, short pants hemmed?

Sometimes I wear pants that I’m just a little too big for. (Nothing drastic, we’re just talking about a muffin top when I sit down) It’s a good reminder that I don’t need THAT MUCH candy/popcorn at the movies. Or that maybe I can skip the junk food once in awhile.

For a long time, I just didn’t keep much junk food in the house. That way, I had to really be craving it (between my fatigue and general inertia) to get off my butt and to the grocery store. Not that that was fool-proof, as any scale will show. But now it’s worse because Tim can zip around for me. Definitely dangerous!

Im very short, my inseam is only 26′ but i save money because I can by cropped pants and wear them as regular pants. My sneakers have a 2 inch lift and I have fallen several times to the side, guess I have no balence).

    LOL!

I am 5´2″ , so I am too a petite and it is really difficult to find clothes that fit me and are cheap. I used to wear high heels all the time, now I am just wearing anything , even flats.

I can buy anything I want, I have just paid off my mortgage…I am debt free!

    Love your blog.

I don’t think I have ever seen anyone wear 6″ heels who wasn’t an exotic dancer! Yikes!!!

There’s a silver lining to everything. Be glad you are clearly in the petite section. I am 5’4″ so I’m on the line for petite vs regular. If I buy regular I either hem everything or wear very high heels. If I buy petite I have no choice but to wear flats. I rarely get to wear the 2″ heels I prefer without renovating a pair of regular pants. I hate hemming massive amounts on pants since you can really change the proportions of the style and they can start to look weird.

For years I’ve stuck to clothing chains that have a regular line and a petite line, but often they are separate stores in the mall. I try things in one store then go next door and try other things. Often I want half the suit from one and half from the other and it’s a pain in the neck.

I’ve recently found a chain that carries regular and petite in the same store, no more running around. I can take both versions to the change room and figure out what works (I often take a couple of pairs of shoes with me to test heel heights). I got several gift cards for this store at Christmas so I’m off to see what “end of winter clearance” deals I can find.

For the past year I’ve been on a self-imposed program to stop buying ANY clothing for an indefinite period of time. Like most women I just plain have more than I reasonably need. It’s been remarkably easy and I’ve found endless ways to mix and match what I already had. I’m making an exception for this outing because A)I have gift cards and it won’t actually cost anything, and B) I need interview clothes. I have plenty of suitable office clothes, but I’d like a new jacket or two and a couple of other pieces to spruce up what I have. They also sell scarves, bags and a little jewelry there so I may get some new bling to perk up what I already have.

PS. The only person I’ve ever seen wearing 6″ heels is Kelly Ripa. I doubt she walks far for lunch in those either!

I’ll be the first guy to comment…as long as you can walk in them 6inches are AMAZING! NICE

Grams – thanks for the fabulous ‘short’ genes. At least you gave me the good skin. I think it’s a fair trade.

Caitlin – I wear ballet slippers to work and switch to the killer heels

Abigail – Yup, I wear heels AND have pants hemmed.

Brandy – I’m at that in-between stage. Not quite cropped pants and not quite regular pants.

    Isela – CONGRATS!! Woo Hoo!!

Jen – I know. Sometimes I ask myself if my shoes look too stripperish then… wear them anyway. ; )

L – That’s what I do. Flip-flops or tennis shoes nights and weekends.

Jenn – I’m actually 5’4″ but my legs are shorter than average and it’s hard to find clothes. Shirts are too short and pants are too long. Nothing fits. And, I love Kelly Ripa.

Evan – That seems to be the consensus of my male co-workers too.

I have never been comfortable in heels, thankfully my legs are proportionate to my body, lol. I don’t think I’ve ever even worn 3″ heels. I’m also 5’4″. Doesn’t it feel funny to tower over other women who are “normal” height? lol

This post cracks me up because I have the same issues. Petite (or “short”) pants are usually a couple inches too long – I need a 28″ inseam but most petite stuff is around 30″.

At least your 5’4″. I am 5’0″ (actually 4’11 3/4″). 6″ heels? That makes you 5’10” with heels on! Where do you find those? They’re not hooker shoes, are they? 😉

So, what do you think ?
