This Doesn’t Happen In Real Life!

by

I have been having a particularly stressful day. Lots of “blah” stuff not worth going into.

And I open my email and see THIS in my inbox:

Can I just reiterate how much I love working with “University A” (teaching based job)!!! Not only are they saying that I’m getting a raise (totally unheard of for adjunct faculty! Who’s even heard of this?!?), but they are retroactively dating it so that, even though I’ve already signed a contract agreement for the semester, they’re going to go ahead and start the raise effective immediately!!

I teach two classes, so this is a raise of $1,000 for the semester (approximately an extra $250/month). Not too shabby! If I continue teaching at a rate of 2 classes per semester (3 semesters: Fall, Summer, Spring), then this equates to an extra $3,000 per year. I’ll take it! : )

I needed this little ray of sunshine today!

Hope you’re all having a good Tuesday!

Seriously, though (I know many readers are in academia) – has anyone even heard of raises being given to adjuncts??? I’ve been teaching for 7 years (4 different institutions) and never once received a raise! This does not happen!!

GOOD FOR YOU, HOORAY, HOORAY, HOORAY ….. Hmmm … you needed $241 and you got $250 … .is that right?

Wow …. maybe you should go buy a couple of Powerball and MegaMillion tickets.

Hey, totally didn’t even put the two (deficit + raise) together! Of course, the money from this month is “supposed” to go toward next month’s income, but its still pretty incredible how that worked out! : )

I am full-time faculty at a state college and on the Faculty Senate. We always advocate for adjunct raises–in fact, last year adjuncts got a better raise than we did. (Not a bad thing for us–we get paid adjunct rate for overloads and summer). That being said, I adjuncted for my university one time and the College of Ed paid 25% less than the College of Science did two years prior so compensation schemes never surprise me.

That’s awesome that you guys are advocating for adjunct raises! I think I’m so used to adjuncts being the FIRST line-item on the budget to get cut when money is tight! Often, departments will make full-time faculty take on additional classes and just get rid of adjuncts all together (maybe not all the adjuncts, but you get my point)

Wow this does NOT happen!! (At least anywhere I’ve heard of or where my husband has worked.) A community college near us pays $1000 before taxes for an entire 15 week on campus college class! I mean it’s highway robbery. My husband taught one of those and halfway through calculated what he made per hour…yeah it wasn’t pretty. Thankfully he now has a full time job and just adjuncts for extra, but still. Most adjunct policies deserve a huge overhaul at schools and I’m glad to see you’re being paid more what you are worth!

I totally agree – $1,000 per class is laughable (well, you’d have to laugh otherwise you’d cry!)

Usually adjuncts at my University receive some raise when tenured faculty get them. However no body has been getting raises this year. Adjunct faculty are usually abused. I’m glad you got the money you deserve itl

So, what do you think ?
