I Do Now I Don’t

by

www.idonowidon’t.com

Has anyone heard of this website?  I remember a friend mentioning it in passing the first time Steve moved out but I didn’t give it much thought at the time.   Now that things are completely over I am ready to investigate.  It helps that Steve totally tried to screw me over on taxes and I need $5,000 to give the IRS by March 28.  I’d like to keep my emergency fund as intact as possible so it sounds delightful to have Steve indirectly pay for the tax bill by selling my wedding rings and his (that I made him take off and leave on the day of his move out—he hesitated because at that time I really think he thought there was a chance to play this game again). As you all know I’m sure, I’m not going to get a lot of money by trying to sell it to a jeweler.  I remembered this website and so I’ve started looking into it.  I thought I’d open it up to the readers in case any of you have better ideas or know something about this website.  It appears that there are two options.  You can auction the items like ebay or you can get a direct offer from the company.  Oh and you’ll love this tidbit:  Steve took a pre-marital 401K withdrawal to buy the stupid ring to begin with!  I didn’t know THAT until we had to pay the penalties for tax year 2009.

For those of you wondering, I will not be adding this $5,000 to my debt list.  I have a date certain that it must be paid and I refuse to consider it part of my “blogging away debt.”  Instead I am making plans to “find” $5,000 while still paying down my debt according to plan.  The tax nightmare has only just begun…not for me though.  I’ve “righted” everything and have a plan to pay what I owe.  So glad I’m no longer connected to that train.

Is there any way you can file an extension? Also, just curious if or how much you’ve factored in this “fiscal cliff” nonsense in your budget for next month? We’re looking at having to pay out an additional $700-$800 a month in taxes and I figure you can’t be far off from that.

I’d suggest going strong on the Pampered Chef extra income and host as many workshops as you can over the next few months, thoroughly go through your house and find any high ticket items that you aren’t using and can part with and Craigslist/eBay them.

Whenever we’re hit with an unexpected expense (especially one with a deadline ) I go ahead and factor it in to the debt paydown budget and take a set amount for x number of months to just get it done. Yes, it sets you back a little on your debt paydown, but slow and steady wins the race.

I’m with Gloria – be as in control of this sale as possible. Maybe “shop around,” see what different jewelers and pawn shops will offer you, and compare to what you’ll get from the website you mentioned? But heck yeah, I’d sell the rings and use the money to help cover taxes.

I never really comment on these posts, but I can express how much your ex husband sounds like my sisters ex husband. He kept spending money they didn’t have which lead to foreclosure and almost eviction on an apartment after the foreclosure. I am soooooo happy you are out of that mess, and keep up the great work that you are doing!

Just fyi, your link doesn’t work, because it shouldn’t have an apostrophe.

Cool site, though! I’ve been married almost 22 years, and I stopped wearing my rings (which aren’t much to speak of) over 18 years ago, so this site isn’t for me, but I will keep it in mind for friends and family.

Cathy covered everything. Unless you can get the kids involved. Any chores or yard work or anything they can do for friends/neighbors?

most pawn shops will give you the value of the gold and maybe a little for the diamonds. I would go to jewelers that do custom work or estate jewelry. They are more likely to give you a better value. I honestly would go with ebay or another similar website, or even craigslist if you really want to get the value out of the rings. Most of the time 1/3 to half of what you paid for it is fair. I know my favorite pawn shop (I love to shop at them) sells their jewelry for between 10 and 30% of the cost in the jewelry store, and they will pay the seller half of that. Remember that if you go to a pawn shop, you don’t have to accept their first offer and have some idea of the value going in.

    Claire,

You are getting good advice here.

I just wanted to add that I would love to buy some new Pampered Chef products. I really want a new mini spatula and a pizza stone. If you had a link to your personal Pampered Chef website, I would buy directly from you. (Jeffrey, is that allowed?)

Also, Pampered Chef is a great fundraiser for school groups, dance and cheerleading programs.

    Tap your resources!

Here is my mantra “You are a smart, savvy, sophisticate woman who dictates to life. You do not allow life to dictate to you.”

Set your goal and charge at it like a bull seeing red 😉

    You can do it!

My wedding bands broke (two thin bands worn either side of my engagement ring with 1 stone and two shoulder teensy diamonds) and I had them redesigned into something more sturdy. Also had four sapphire chips added.

He had me bring in all the old gold I had which was 2 10k gold rings and one 14K gold band. He paid me about 3x what the guy in the paper advertised.

Total cost for the new ring, taxes (13%) included, $650.

Don’t know if you’d get as good a deal if you aren’t buying something new but going with a family run, custom jewelry shop, seems to be the place to start.

I just purchased a ring off I do now I don’t, and am waiting for them to evaluate and send it to me. I think it looks like a great idea and would make you money compared to a pawn shop. I looked locally at pawn shops and the biggest ring the 3 shops had was a 1 carat center stone for 1700, you know the seller got totally ripped off. I would have purchased a ring off Craigslist if I could have found one, but there was just nothing local I liked.

So, what do you think ?
