It’s time for the monthly Bump Update…
March 3rd:
Sonogram pics could not be any clearer – it’s a boy. Since discovering this information, I find I am far less gentle with my food choices. When I thought it was a girl, I ate fruits and veggies. Baby boy now gets fruits and veggies… and spicy jalapeño burgers. It’s a boy. He can take it like a man.
March 4th:
I inform baby boy that waking hours are between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., NOT 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Baby spends the next 24 hours kicking incessantly proving his complete control of the situation.
March 7th:
My husband said I’m the least emotional pregnant person he’s ever met… after I tackled him to the floor, choked him until he couldn’t breathe, and demanded he say it.
March 10th:
I thought by my having a baby, mom would finally stop asking me to have one – and she did.
Now she just asks when I’m planning to have another.
March 15th:
Thought about writing a press release:
Dear mothers (and you know which ones you are): You are not in a competition for the gold metal in the world’s most difficult pregnancy. I’m sorry your pregnancy/delivery/husband was awful. Mine, thus far, has been pretty awesome and I’d like to stay in my dream world that the rest will be the same. Don’t feel the need to share the same stories over… and over… and over again. I didn’t want to hear it the first time.
March 19th:
The week before every doctor’s appointment, I bump up my usual workout routine by walking a little further or exercising a little longer each day. Every time I see the nurse with her clipboard standing near the scale, I feel like I’m weighing in for The Biggest Loser… in reverse.
March 24th:
Concerned that, at nearly 6 months, I still don’t need maternity clothes. Is this baby even growing?
March 25th:
Suddenly need maternity clothes. Belly popped like a turkey timer.
My dental emergency knocked down our addition to savings a bit but we still pulled together another $1,000. Yay!

*As a reminder, cash savings is in preparation for costs of time missed from work and from any hospital fees. All remaining funds will be applied to debt.*
I’ve been preparing our post-baby delivery finances and things aren’t looking good. Between the loss of roommate income and the addition of daycare expenses, we won’t be making those $1,200 debt payments each month.
In fact, for a while, we will only be making minimums on student loans. At best, we can hope for a killer tax refund next year to pay off the remaining debt, otherwise… we’ll be in this minimum payment boat for a while and it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed at the sudden loss of momentum.
Since we both received nice pay increases this year, we will likely have to wait two years for further income boosts.
I worked myself into a nice emotional tizzy until I remembered that I need to be more optimistic so I sat down and wrote a list.
I’m grateful we don’t have car or credit card debt. Those payments would sink us.
I’m grateful my husband will graduate a few days before the baby is born. No more tuition payments!!!
I’m grateful we have a healthy emergency fund and savings account. I sleep a little better with them.
I’m grateful we have some household items to sell after helping someone move. We will likely be able to buy all the necessary baby furniture with that cash. Otherwise, I’m not sure how we’d pull it off.
And, I’m grateful for my family. If we can’t afford food, I know my mom and grandma always have something good cooking. We’ll never starve.
I’m with you. I get depressed and overwhelmed and my list made me feel slightly better but I’m certainly no Pollyanna.
I guess we’ll just have to work through it.
I’d like to take a moment to wish a very happy wedding anniversary to my parents. 41 years ago today, my mom and dad drove to Las Vegas and married on April Fool’s Day.
My dad still insists he married my mom on April Fool’s Day just in case he should ever feel the need to call it off. He could say he was joking.
Now you know where my offbeat sense of humor originates.
Thanks for the inspiration.
