It’s cold and flu season.

How do I know?

Because I’m home sick today.

I work out. I eat right. Yet somehow, I get smacked with a cold every time someone sneezes.

My husband suggested I take a sip of vodka every 20 minutes to cure my sore throat but so far, the only effect is an inability to type without 15 errors in each sentence.

So. What’s your best common cold cure?

  1. Mrs. M responded:

I drink tea with honey every time I start to feel sick. Hope you feel better soon!

  2. Dream Mom responded:

When I feel a cold coming on, I take a tablespoon of Organic, Virgin Coconut Oil. It seems to get rid of it right away. (Must be organic and not refined. I also take 1 tsp. daily.) It has anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties and is used in cases of pneumonia.

I also drink a green smoothie most days-it’s chock full of vitamins and minerals (1.5 cups water, 3 large handfuls of organic, baby spinach, 1 frozen banana, 1/2 cup of any kind of berries). I feel like a million bucks drinking these-for some reason I feel better than eating the fruits and vegetables separately. I still try to eat more vegetables on top of the smoothie, but at least I start my day with a good five servings of f & v.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  3. Dream Mom responded:

Not sure why I used caps for the organic, virgin, coconut oil-sorry about that grammatical error, lol.

  4. Jen responded:

I stay home from work and sleep. I used to go to work sick until someone told me they wanted to stay home. They didn’t appreciate my germs :)

I take a multivitamin daily to avoid getting sick. It helps a lot. Plus, when I do get sick it’s not as severe.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  5. Charlotte responded:

I stayed home yesterday sick too :(

I drink as much fluid as I can to flush it out of my system – usually rotating between pineapple juice, water, gatorade, tea and sometimes cola

For phlegm type coughs/sore throat I gargle with listeine – similar to the vodka idea – the alcohol burns it off and the mint clears my nose for a few minutes at least

Also – as much sleep as possible

Did you just turn on your heat? It may be a dust allergy from the dust collected in the vents over the summer.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  6. Lizzie responded:

Tea w/ honey, lots of water, homemade chicken noodle soup (with homemade broth), and sleep.

Have you tried taking probiotics daily? There is liquid form, pill form, yogurt, kefir. etc. And make sure you are getting enough vitamin D. Salmon, cod liver oil, a little bit of sunshine or tuna will all provide a good dose.

  7. Saving Savy Pinkey responded:

Hey, same here. I was at home yesterday due to cold and flu. What I tried was a mixture of jaggery and turmeric. You can make a capsule of it by mixing it well and have it and no drinking cold water after that for half an hour.
It really works. I went to work today.

  8. Stacie responded:

Not vodka – whisky. In moderation, it clears up congestion. But don’t drink it every 20 minutes. You’ll just get drunk, and your body needs its energy to fight off those cold germs! :-)

For a sore throat, I second the call for warm tea with honey and honey cough drops.

  9. Vicki responded:

    Lots of hot mint tea!

  10. Starr responded:

Straight honey is good for coughing. Been shown to work better than cough syrup (doesn’t say much since cough syrup has been shown to not work at all).

Taking illness seriously and resting is the best cure. All the other stuff if fluff and will do little to actually get rid of the cold faster.

  11. Sean responded:

When I get a cold, I eat. i get quite hungry and eating like a pig always is good for me!

  12. Jan responded:

I always drink lots of peppermint tea and then I get a carne asada plate – for some reason, that usually helps me feel better – at the very least, I can breathe after dinner because it clears out my sinuses!

  13. Amy responded:

There was actually an article in the New York Times today about how gargling salt water alleviates cold symptoms – particularly soar throat and upper respiratory congestion. Otherwise, the best advice I can give you is to drink a TON of water. Citrus juice causes phlegm, so stay away from that!

  14. Just Me Again responded:

Sore throat: Anything with banana juice in it. It coats your throat in a way that nothing else does.

  15. CDW responded:

When I get a common cold I love to make some Lipton chicken Noodle soup. The healing powers of chicken are amazing!

    Also for a sore throat…Beer! :o )

  16. sandra responded:

    Banana’s have juice?? :-)

I vote for gargling with warm salt water – frugal and it works!

  17. Karen responded:

I find the second I start feeling like I’m coming down with something I start drinking plenty of water and 3 times a day I drink EmergenC—a powder you add to water available at most stores—I know, everyone says vitamin C is a waste of time but it works for me.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  18. Beks responded:

CDW – I like where your head is at.

  19. emmi responded:

yogi throat comfort tea with slippery elm works great for sore throat. Really well. So does sipping very hot, very salt bouillon (just the cube stuff works well). Mulberry tea made from dried mulberries seeeeemed to shrink the total time I’ve had the last two colds. I had read that one somewhere, and heck, I figured, worst case it just tastes good. Maybe it helped. Didn’t make it worse.

Keep eating. That’s important. Do not let your blood sugar crash. Your immune system needs mucho calories to work and if you run out of energy, your immune system shuts down too.

Too funny about your award. Me, I’d be thrilled to have an excuse to miss that.
