Finding Odd Jobs…

I’ve had a few readers ask how my husband and I find odd jobs.

I’m fortunate to still be connected to previous employers and do work for them when the owners are unable to complete the projects themselves. When I’m not busy with that (which is almost never. I work A LOT for them), I take writing jobs off Craigslist, work as a car shows greeter, and help as an ‘ambassador’ at large gatherings like ComicCon and sporting events with security companies. You can look for these kinds of jobs on Craigslist (be very, very careful on Craigslist) or by approaching employers who host mobile type events that require large amounts of temporary staff. If you are willing to invest the time, these temporary or part time jobs are very easy to find. I make anywhere from $100 to $150 a day with temporary jobs.

My husband is incredibly handy. When he’s not working his 8 to 5 job or going to school, he helps others with construction and plumbing projects. He does exceptional work and has never had to advertise his services. Word of mouth has been his greatest ally. Make sure to follow the laws of your state. California is very strict – no projects over $500 are permitted for unlicensed contractors.

I also heard about a website called 48days.net. On the left side of the website, there is a Post-It labeled “Take a Look at Dan’s 48 Low Cost Business Ideas”. He lists some great ideas for making extra money.

Hi Beks- I used to follow this blog a lot when Tricia was posting, and when you started, I think you had almost 30 grand in debt. I can’t believe you’re almost to the 4 figures now. Good job!!! It was so exciting when Tricia hit that milestone, lol
I don’t know about “odd jobs” but try an inventory service- if it’s the beginning of the quarter, they might need people to get up at the butt crack of dawn and count stuff in stores. Not the most glamorous thing in the world, but it’s what I’d do. I’ve done it before, and it’s good $$$

You can also check out Rat Race Rebellion, for those who’d rather do something from home, they list opportunities in many categories http://www.ratracerebellion.com/index.htm – they claim to be prescreened and have been around since the late 90′s I believe.

I’ve been working with a company for a little while distributing free discount prescription drug cards helping people who have to pay full price for their prescriptions. And there are millions of people in this situation. I work with hospitals, social organizations, clinics, etc. It’s been really gratifying since I’m truly helping others as well as making extra money every month – from home and it’s not some network marketing thingy either. That’s the best part.

I’m with Danielle — I took a 4-day inventory job 2 weeks ago and I made $400 AND still had time to go to my regular job! It was great.

I found the job on Kijiji.com
I also tutor Chemistry (during the school year Sept – Apr) and babysit for friends with children that need a night out. The extra cash can really add up fast.

Great tips. This summer, to pick up extra work, I posted a tutoring job post on Craigslist and picked up two additional students. Of course, I require that they call me first (no emails! Usually just junk.) I’ve also tried to sway them into meeting me at a local library first, before going to their home (don’t want to end up a casualty of Craigslist!)

I’ve also done the inventory thing, years ago. It paid okay as long as you don’t mind the odd hours!
