Great news – what better Christmas gift could you ask for?

But I have to agree w/some of the other commenters – if the job situation is still tenuous, you might want to consider building up your emergency fund and not throw so much $$ @ your debt, esp if you think it would help you sleep better @ night to have more of a cushion.

Excellent! I lost half my pay and hours from May through October so I understand a little of what you were going through. We were able to use the uncertainty as an incentive to beef up our emergency account so we are actually in better financial shape now than before!

I agree with others suggesting you save extra money. The economy is so shaky right now it’d make sense to save up extra money, even at the expense of paying more towards debt. After all, he already got laid off once – it could happen again

I forgot how much you have in your emergency fund, but I would aggressively save for at least 6 months worth of living expenses. After that, then I’d split extra money between the emergency fund and debt, with maybe a little for extras – 45% savings, 45% debt, and 10% fun. If you can end up with a years worth saved, then you’d have a very good cushion and I bet it’d go a long way to making you feel more secure.

Congratulations! This is such great news for you guys!

I really like Susan’s suggestion of financially acting like the job isn’t there. Or maybe, act like he’s only bringing in 15% of his salary or something. That way, you can get the essentials, but won’t be tempted to buy luxuries (even the small ones that seem so innocent at the time).
I know how easy it can be to fall into the trap of “but we’ve done without ____ for so long, we deserve to have just one now” and before long all the money is gone again.

Congratulations – that’s wonderful news! And what a nice holiday gift! My suggestion FWIW – financially, act like he didn’t get his job back. Continue to scrimp and save for a few months so that you have a nice comfortable emergency fund (my personal goal – enough money to live – bare bones living – for a year). Money in the bank is never a bad thing.
