As expected, my husband was offered his old job back. He will start January 4th.

For the first time in two and a half months, I’m going to sleep very well.

Looks like we can start to chip away at our debt again. Woo Hoo!!

Congrats! It’s always such a massive relief when you get more financially stable.

Awesome news! I’ve been hoping all day for you :)

  3. Susan responded:

Congratulations, Beks! Great news! I don’t usually comment but I’m a faithful reader.

  4. Cynthia responded:

Yay! What a sweet Christmas gift indeed!

  5. Anon responded:

That’s wonderful! Make sure you build a healthy emergency fund before you start paying down debt again. I’m not sure the economy’s in the clear yet.

  6. Nicole responded:

Now that’s how you celebrate Christmas! What a blessing!

  7. Melanie responded:

    Congrats!! I know that’s such a relief:)

  8. Mona responded:

    Woohoo!

  9. brooklynchick responded:

YAY! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!! So exciting and what a relief. PHEW.

  10. PH responded:

oh wow! That’s fantastic news! Merry Christmas!

  11. Susan responded:

Congratulations – that’s wonderful news! And what a nice holiday gift! :) My suggestion FWIW – financially, act like he didn’t get his job back. Continue to scrimp and save for a few months so that you have a nice comfortable emergency fund (my personal goal – enough money to live – bare bones living – for a year). Money in the bank is never a bad thing. :)

  12. Caitlin responded:

Congratulations! This is such great news for you guys!

I really like Susan’s suggestion of financially acting like the job isn’t there. Or maybe, act like he’s only bringing in 15% of his salary or something. That way, you can get the essentials, but won’t be tempted to buy luxuries (even the small ones that seem so innocent at the time).
I know how easy it can be to fall into the trap of “but we’ve done without ____ for so long, we deserve to have just one now” and before long all the money is gone again. :(

  13. Lizzie responded:

So happy for you!!! Now, go get some sleep, girl :-) !

  14. Debra responded:

    Congrats! and Merry Christmas!!!! :-)

    Debra

  15. Dayna responded:

As the wife of a man who was unemployed for about 2 1/2 months this summer, I am thrilled for you! Now you can enjoy the holiday without the stress of no job hanging over your heads.

  16. Jen responded:

Awesome!!!! Talk about Happy Holidays! :D

I agree with others suggesting you save extra money. The economy is so shaky right now it’d make sense to save up extra money, even at the expense of paying more towards debt. After all, he already got laid off once – it could happen again :(

I forgot how much you have in your emergency fund, but I would aggressively save for at least 6 months worth of living expenses. After that, then I’d split extra money between the emergency fund and debt, with maybe a little for extras – 45% savings, 45% debt, and 10% fun. If you can end up with a years worth saved, then you’d have a very good cushion and I bet it’d go a long way to making you feel more secure.

  17. Isela responded:

Congratulations! This is the best way to start the new year. Merry Christmas to both of you!

  18. Karen responded:

Excellent! I lost half my pay and hours from May through October so I understand a little of what you were going through. We were able to use the uncertainty as an incentive to beef up our emergency account so we are actually in better financial shape now than before!

I wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year, Becky! Get some sleep, OK?

  19. Janelle responded:

Merry Christmas! Now that is one great gift! :)

  20. Sallie's Niece responded:

    Thanks awesome!

  21. T'Pol responded:

Congrats! What a wonderful Christmas gift for you guys! I hope I find a job pretty soon too. I keep praying and hoping…

  22. Megan responded:

What a wonderful Christmas gift!!! Here’s to nights of peaceful, restful sleep in 2010 and beyond!

  23. Jean responded:

Great news – what better Christmas gift could you ask for?

But I have to agree w/some of the other commenters – if the job situation is still tenuous, you might want to consider building up your emergency fund and not throw so much $$ @ your debt, esp if you think it would help you sleep better @ night to have more of a cushion.

    Merry Christmas!

  24. Bucksome responded:

What a relief to you. I’m sure your
holidays will be more joyous knowing there’s going to be another regular check coming in.

  25. Dogfood Provider responded:

Hooray! Now you can slow from sprint speed to marathon speed for a while. Of course, even marathoners stop to grab a banana and some H2O on the side of the course now and again.

  26. Mar responded:

Congratulations – what wonderful news. I’m really happy for you!

  27. Michelle H. responded:

I’m so glad to hear this! Many blessings!
