My sisters and I have always been competitive. When my parents had four girls, a mere 18 months between each, what else did they expect?

It was always about who dated first, who dated most, who was the skinniest, who was the most tan, who traveled the most, who could annoy mom and pop the fastest…and on and on.

I thought that since ten years has passed since we lived together, we perhaps…

actually grew up.

Hah.

As we sat at my brother’s wedding, my sister said, ‘How’s your debt snowball? I think I might be done in late fall of 2010. I’m winning!’

To which I immediately responded, ‘You are soooo immature. This isn’t a race. We aren’t 12 anymore.’

Needless to say, I secretly went home, looked for anything and everything to sell and re-adjusted my budget in an attempt to somehow pull a payoff date of EARLY fall.

Just a heads up – when it comes to relationships between sisters, you never grow up.

That’s motivation! At least you have a sister in the same boat. My brother is so fiscally responsible that he’s never been in debt, and has huge savings. I never bring up finances with him, because he thinks I’m an idiot for being in debt (and I am, but I don’t need him to tell me). :)

Dh and I are finally seeing light at the end of the debt tunnel, but I still won’t bring it up with my brother. He’ll just find something else to harass me about.

I’m curious. What do you sell and how do you sell it?
    Thanks.

It is kind of nice, Beks, that we can keep our childhood going a little longer like that though, and we do laugh about it, right?

  4. Mysti responded:

I think siblings will always compete, just the subject matter changes. It isn’t about the end…it is about the journey. If you rush to pay off your debt just to “beat” her, you are less likely to learn as much….thus the potential to fall back into old ways.

    Good luck!

  5. Nicole responded:

That sounds like a great thing to be competitive on! Sounds like you’ll have to keep up so she doesn’t win ; )

  6. Beks responded:

Jaye – I sell EVERYTHING on Craigslist. It’s an effort but I always require cash and watch out for scams.

John – Well, I try to laugh but my sister is 15 pounds thinner than I am so I’m still angry. *laugh*

Mysti – I’ve been paying off this debt for over a year. I’m so DONE with debt, it makes me sick just to think about it. I have a feeling, I won’t be back to my credit card ways ever again!

Nicole – My sister is a sneaky one.
