I have a friend who’s been unemployed for the first time in her life (she’s in her 50s) for the past six months, I believe. For every job she applies for, there are about 500 applicants. My gosh, things are really bad. I’m thankful for my husband’s job.

Well I wish him good luck. The market is tough. Even here in DC. There must be 10,000 applicants for 1000 positions. But have faith. We’ll be hoping for you!

There’s a lot of jobs out here on the East coast. They’re a little harder to get into unless you know someone, though.

we lived in San Diego from 1997 to 2005 and I totally understand what you are saying, such a huge city and so few jobs to go around. When my husband graduated from college in 2004, he was unable to find full-time work in his field (system administrator) and after a year of temp work, we moved up the coast. surprisingly, for a rural area, he found work here within three weeks and has been there (also a government job)since Oct 2005. I wish your husband the best of luck – government jobs are still great to have, annoying sometimes, but still stable.

Wow. About 2-3 months ago there was job fair in the Boston area. They had to close it down after 2 hours because far more people turned out than expected and they couldn’t handle the numbers.
