My stimulus payment hasn’t hit the bank yet (I checked about five times today!). Last night, I caught a news clip on a Canadian channel that mentioned a possible second stimulus payment. That’s the first time I’ve heard of that. So I went digging to find out more.

From the BaltimoreSun.com (April 29,2008):

Democrats in Congress have said that the tax rebates aren’t big enough and have been pushing for a second stimulus package.

The package that they have been pushing may be the one referred to here at Boston.com (April 9, 2008):

Hoping to build on a $168-billion economic stimulus bill already enacted, Hoyer said new legislation would focus on broadening food stamps for the poor, extending jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed and investing in construction and other public works projects to create domestic jobs.

The legislation would be in addition to a series of steps Congress wants to take to shore up the U.S. housing industry, which is plagued by foreclosures that threaten to undercut the global economy.

That’s all I could find at the moment. It looks like there may be discussion about it but nothing more than that. Have any of you heard anything more about a possible second stimulus check?

Against my better “debt reduction mode” judgement, I went on a special date with my son this past weekend. Of all places to go, we went to a local place that is similar to a Chuck-e-Cheese’s where you spend money to play games and win tickets. You redeem the tickets for some very cheap prizes.

This was something brand new to my son, and I haven’t been to a place like that since I was a teenager.

We played the games and even won a 760 ticket jackpot on one of the games. You should have seen the look on my son’s face as the tickets kept spewing from the machine. “When is it going to stop!!” he asked.

Then he won a jackpot on another game and won 199 tickets. He jumped up and down in excitement. Even mom caught herself clapping in excitement. That’s a side of me that doesn’t come out very often.

Yes, I could have used that $30 for debt reduction, but my guess is that I still would be in a funky mood if we didn’t go and have some fun. It helped to perk me right up. I would go as far as to say that I needed this experience with my son. So often I am working late and time with him is being lost. I feel a tremendous amount of guilt about that. I also get very tired of being focused on making money all of the time.

For me, spending $30 to have fun with my son and to forget about all of my worries for a few hours was worth every penny. We certainly can’t do it all of the time, but this one time was very helpful because I needed a recharge.

My funk is officially O-V-E-R!! Time to kick some debt booty!

It’s been very rough for me for the last few weeks. I’ve been working a lot, but now I get to see what that extra work was for. We were able to pay an additional $300 towards our credit card debt, bringing the total to $10,698.

Unless our economic stimulus payment arrives in the next two days, our credit card debt will stay at $10,698 through the end of the month. When I calculate my net worth at the end of the month, we’ll see how everything turns out. I’m pretty sure this month will end up being one of the best months we have had so far.

It’s too early to project how May will go. The economic stimulus payment will give a much needed boost to our debt reduction and put us under $10K (yay!). We should have some more extra money, but we may end up doing some repairs around the house. You can only put them off for so long and spring is the perfect time to do them. Then again, I think I said that last spring too!

So we’ll see how things go ;)

Thanks Sherri for the heads up! She left a link to a story about the economic stimulus payments coming out a little earlier than expected:

President Bush said tax rebates will start going out Monday, earlier than previously announced, and should help Americans cope with rising gasoline and food prices, as well as aid a slumping economy.

It looks like the official IRS payment schedule site has been revised as well:

People who use direct deposit also will be among the first to receive the payments starting April 28.

The payment schedule itself appears to be the same as before President Bush’s announcement. If all goes well, it looks like we will have our check by mid-May. That’s exciting, because that will put our debt under the 5 figure mark!

To be honest, though, I’m starting to feel a little uneasy about food prices. We may spend some of that payment after all, to stock up on necessity/pantry type items. I’m still considering it.

I tend to speak too soon. I did it again with our IRS payment because it cleared the bank this morning. Whew! I do tend to worry a lot more than I probably should. Not sure why, I’ve been like that for as long as I can remember.

Okay, on to some links this morning.

First up is DebtKid, keeping it real, with a post about debt and loneliness.

Silicon Valley Blogger has an article about recessions. I’m not in tune to the economy as a whole so this was an interesting read for me.  I have read a few other articles yesterday related to the economy that didn’t sit well with me, and I’ll write more about them later.

Cleverdude started a mini garden. We have a small garden in our yard, but I’ve been thinking about bringing some of it indoors. With grocery costs increasing, it might be a good thing to do.

Lastly, congrats to NCN who just welcomed baby number three into his household! It’s funny, when I think of my son as a baby, I can still smell the “new baby” smell :)

My son has a collection of stuffed animals. He loves them so much and each of them has a name. There’s even a mommy and a daddy and babies. It’s so cute.

A few days ago, he brought me one of the babies. It had a tear on it’s leg and the inside stuffing was coming out. Sewing is not my specialty, but I have done my best in the past to mend some of my son’s clothing. He handed his baby over to me to fix him.

I asked him to set his baby on his desk. It sat there one night. Then another. It completely slipped my mind to fix it even though it was in plain sight.

The other day, my son brought it over to me before he went to bed. He asked me again if I could please fix it. I felt horrible. With everything going on, mom couldn’t even remember to fix her son’s stuffed animal. The look in his eyes was one of disappointment. I told him that I was sorry that I forgot and I would fix him tonight.

After he went to bed, I got out my sewing kit and fixed that small tear the best I could. I hid the baby behind my back and went into my son’s room. He looked at me, wondering what I as doing, and then I showed him his baby. The look on his face…well, it will be ingrained in my mind for some time. It was the look of pure, innocent happiness. One small thing made his day brighter.

You can learn a lot from kids. Sometimes, being a grown up isn’t fun. You can lose sight of those small things to the point where they don’t even make you smile anymore. For me, I get so hung up on the bad (stress, financial worries, etc.) that I forget about the good.

There are plenty of good, happy things if I allow myself to notice them and appreciate them.

Yeah, that’s sort of a weird title for a blog post, but I’m not sure what else to put. I like to keep things rated G on here (so my son can read it and I don’t feel weird about it), but believe me, I felt like writing something else for the title.

It’s been almost two weeks, and the IRS has not cashed our self employment tax check yet. If there is one entity that I want to be completly A-OK with, it’s the IRS. It makes me sick to my stomach and I’m upset to see more money in our account than should be there.

I’m not sure what to do. Should I wait and hope it finally arrives? I’ve never had a payment to the IRS take this long. Should I cut another check? If I did that, I’d have to pull from our savings.

I am 100% certain that it was mailed because we made a special stop to the mail box to mail it. That envelope left my hands and fell into the box. I triple checked to make sure there was stamp on it. I did my part, but it hasn’t been cashed yet.

I guess I will give it a little more time before making a decision on what to do. I think I am going to look into making this payment automatically from now on.
