I’ve discussed this before, but I happened to remember to obtain our credit reports last night so I thought I would give a little reminder on here.

Every year, you are entitiled to one free annual credit report from one of the three major credit reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion & Equifax). You can opt to get all three at one time yearly, or you can space them out over a few months. For example, you can get Experian now, then in four months get the TransUnion and then in another four months you can get Equifax. With doing that, you can check your report out three times a year.

To get started, all you have to do is visit annualcreditreport.com. There are a few imitation sites out there that even charge you money! But annualcreditreport.com is the authorized site and it’s the best price of all…free.

I’m happy to report that everything seemed in order on our reports. In the past, we have had to clear up accounts showing as open, but were closed. We almost didn’t get our mortgage because of an extra auto payment showing up. Mistakes are sometimes made, so it’s best to check things out to make sure everything is in order. It’s also important to check everything out for suspicious activity.

    Hi!

I am excited to find your blog. I have spent a couple of hours reading it tonight. I started from the end and am making my way forward to current.

I have just begun my own blog, to detail my own journey into becoming debt free, hopefully with the same success you are having.

I’d love to find out how I can participate in carnivals and festivals and get active on a blogroll.

    Thanks in advance! :-)
And congrats on your great work so far!

And watch out for them trying to bait and switch: I know myfreecreditreport.com pulls that all the time.

When I looked at my last year, I let the annualcreditreport page time out (just letting the browse window sit for 15+ minutes on the three selection page) and it allowed me to look at my credit report multiple times until I think they figured out I had accessed more than once. With allowing the page to time out it even allowed me to look at my credit report after the agencies corrected the problem or that might have been because ‘the view’ was reset because something had been corrected. You have to love crappy web design :)

Are you allowed to check your report every calendar year (2007, 2008, etc) or every 12 months (12/2007, have to wait until 12/2008)?

  6. Tricia responded:

    SavingDiva - it’s once every 12 months.

I’m lucky that each year I’ve checked my credit report I haven’t noticed any major issues. (The first year a gas card I thought I had cancelled was not cancelled, and the company was actually pretty pushy about trying to get me to keep it.) Since then no other problems like that - but interestingly one agency had my name spelled incorrectly! They were very pleasant when I called to correct it though. So always a good idea to check all that basic personal information carefully!

Thanks for reminding me to check my credit report. Apparently my mom still hadn’t removed my “authorized user” status from her credit cards and her late payments were hurting my credit score. I called up BofA and Chase and got off all by myself last night. It was much easier than I thought it would be.
