While cruising around the blogosphere earlier, I found an article at Boston Gal’s Open Wallet about a segment on NPR radio that talked about personal finance blogs. In the segment, Blogging Away Debt was mentioned, as well as the following blogs:

Single Ma and Money
Stingy Students
Make Love Not Debt
Defying Debt in 2 Years

It’s a short piece between Renee Montagne (NPR) and Joan Goldwasser (Kiplinger’s Personal Finance). If you are interested, you can listen to the segment here.

It was nice to hear Joan’s viewpoint of debt blogging.

There were some great debt-related posts this week. Here are a few that caught my eye:

D is keeping it real and sharing that One Thing Kept Me in Debt Longer Than I Should Have Been

JPL shares How We Got Out of Credit Card Debt.

Ever wonder what personal finance bloggers talk about during IM conversations? Here’s a chat I had with two bloggers about the U.S. Savings Rate.

FMF is having some March Madness with 64 blogger posts competing against each other and some prizes. I’m not sure if I am going to participate. If there’s a post I wrote that you really like, please let me know asap and maybe I’ll send it over there to compete with other blogger posts.

As for the Freebies I usually post on Friday, I haven’t had a chance to search around for some great ones this week. If you’d like to search for some of your own, I have a link on the left to “Free Stuff” under “Good Info” that will get you off to a good start.

Enjoy!

I’ve drawn the numbers, and here are the commenters that were randomly selected to receive a copy of Quicken 2005:

31 – Laura
27 – Amanda
21 – Nick
35 – Colleen
9 – Amanda

I’ve emailed everyone this morning, so hopefully I hear back from everyone soon. As for the book giveaway, I have heard back from everyone.

I know there have been a few comments as to why I did these giveaways. There were two reasons, 1.) to celebrate blogging one year and 2.) because I make money from advertising on this site. I wanted to give back something because without readers, I wouldn’t make money with advertising. Normally, all revenue from this site goes towards our debt. In fact, after I announced I was giving away something, I received a brand new advertiser that paid for the whole giveaway. I took it as a sign that it was a good thing that I was doing…giving away things that can help others take control of their finances.

Will there be more giveaways? Probably not for a while unless I receive items for free to giveaway. I may or may not do something similar to mark year #2 of blogging. It’s too soon to tell for that, and the one thing I know all too well is that life is unpredictable.

f you didn’t win a copy of Quicken, but are thinking of purchasing a copy yourself, please stick around. While helping these winners get set-up, I plan on writing a little tutorial and having it available for free for viewing or download (I haven’t decided on a format yet).

For me, writing this blog has been so freeing. My debt no longer feels like the big secret that it once was and I feel like some weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It sounds like some of you would like to give it a try as well.

If you are interested in starting your own blog, you can read my post, In Debt and Want to Start a Blog? Here’s How. That should get you started blogging. If you use a free blog site like blogger, you can have your own blog in a few minutes and it is fairly early to learn to use the program to write.

For those of you that do not wish to start a blog, but would like to declare your debt on the internet, you can always email me your story and I will post it on here. But, you must tell me in your email that you want me to post it. Otherwise, I will keep our email private.

I have been dragging my feet when it comes to stashing money away for a rainy day. It’s been hard for me to think about saving money earning less in interest than what we are paying towards our credit cards. But there is something to be said about having some cash stashed away if you need it. We have $122 currently in a savings account but that really isn’t enough.

Since we’ve hit the debt hard this past year, the beginning of the second year I am focusing on stashing some money away. Not a whole lot, but I think a good amount for us to start with is enough to cover all of our expenses for a month. I ran a report of our spending last year and it looks like $2,500 should be enough to cover a month of necessities and debt payments. I’m comfortable with that amount and it would provide a sense of security.

My husband’s temporary job has been extended for a while longer and he also received a raise the other day, so I figure we should be able to save $2,500 within a few months. I look at that amount and I realize that if we paid that amount towards our credit card debt we would be under the $20,000 mark. I really want to hit that milestone, but I feel at this point in our journey we have to get some cash stashed away.

It’s time. I’m ready to starting saving.

I asked last week if anyone needed some reading material. I drew the names earlier today and sent out emails to the winners.

The numbers I drew were

3 – Jon (The Wall Street Journal Lifetime Guide to Money)

12 – sam (The Consumer Reports Money Book)

7 – moneysmartlife (The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom)

If I don’t hear back from everyone by Thursday, February 22 I will draw new numbers. So far I have heard from one person.

Thank you everyone for participating and I hope the winners enjoy these books :)

Thanks again to a wonderful reader that let me know that my site isn’t displaying properly on Internet Explorer 6. What you should see it a middle section with my daily content and then a sidebar on each side. On the right hand side you should see my total credit card debt. For some reason, in IE 6 the right sidebar is getting pushed below my content. I’ve checked the site in FireFox, Safari and IE 7 and it appeared fine. So, if you are running those programs the site probably looks like it’s supposed to. It’s IE 6 that seems to not like my site.

I am also having problems with my web hosting. It isn’t necessarily their fault. I did find a cheap plan to get this site up and running and I am on one of their plans where I share a server with many different users. The increased traffic seems to be creating havoc with the server and sometimes you may get error messages when trying to visit. The alternative is to host my site on a dedicated server (my site would be the only one on it) and that costs a bit of money which is usually more than my site can reliably bring in with ad revenue a month.

I am going to try to see what I can do and as always thanks for your patience :)
