[...] When I ran the numbers for 2006, I was a bit surprised to see that our car cost over $2,000 to own. Granted, a big part of that went towards fuel ($649). [...]

Tricia,

When you are ready to quit, I highly recommend "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr. It's around $12 on Amazon.com and it worked for me. I quit August 20 of last year and it hasn't been bad at all.

Thanks Poorer than You for the suggestion. I have seen the Money Savvy Pig and had it in my online shopping cart a few times. I just wish it was a little cheaper (it would be over $20 when you add shipping).

Maria and GInger - it took 4 years for my son to finally get out of diapers. It was a wonderful day when he wanted to only wear his underware.

Matt - thanks!

Mark - I track my mortgage as a liability in Quicken and I track my debt payments as credit cards. Doing it that way allows me to track the balances of all of my debt. Unfortunately, the payments going towards my mortgage principal and debt principal do not show up on my income/expense report because of that. All payments go towards reducing the liabilities. The best way to show the change in those is to look at my net worth. For 2007 reports, I am trying to figure out how I can add that information so others can see it. I think I will have to add that information manually after exporting the report to Excel.

I am just learning to use Quicken to track our income/expenses, so seeing something like this is very helpful and motivating - Thanks. Additionally, how do you account for mortgage principal and your debt payments in Quicken? I noticed you do not record an expense for your CC payments.

Thanks for posting this! It was actually really interesting to read (to my surprise!). As far as reducing your spending on toys for your son, now that he's getting to the school age, have you considered starting him on a small allowance? I really like the idea of the "Money Savvy Pig" (The Simple Dollar has a great discription of it here: http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2007/01/14/the-money-savvy-pig-and-my-sons-allowance/ )

Also, I hope he feels better soon!
