Some job search websites have the option of posting your resume online. The theory behind that is an employer may be able to find you instead of you finding the employer. Does that really work?

Back before my son was born, my husband and I both posted our resumes online at Michigan Talent Bank. We did it to give it a shot and we actually forgot about doing it.

Then my husband received an email from an employer that was interested in interviewing him. That took us both off guard. Unfortunately, the position involved relocating over 500 miles away and we were not interested in moving so my husband politely declined the offer. If he had obtained that position, he would have definitely increased our income.

If you are interested in posting your resume, I’d suggest submitting your resume to well-known companies and only doing it if it’s a free service. If you think about it, you are the potential employee. It makes sense that these companies make money from the employers being able to search the database. But, then again, I am a big believer that you shouldn’t have to pay for a job or for submitting your resume.

Warning: There are websites out there that are in the business of collecting resumes and don’t have any jobs available. There is also the possibility of being scammed. I found an excellent article about steps you can take to have a safe online resume posting experience. It is worth a read before you post your resume online.

Happy job hunting, er…happy employers searching for you :)
