I think about all of the things that happened in my life (financially speaking), and I have been fortunate that in our darkest times something happened that helped us through. Maybe it was some unexpected money (like a forgotten rebate) or maybe it was getting an interview for a job.
Would you say that we were lucky?
Luck is a term used often, but sometimes I think there is no such thing as luck. Yes, there is something to be said about being in the right place at the right time. I think that can have a lot to do with what happens in our life. Then the question becomes, “Why were you in the right place at the right time?”
I believe it all has to do with one word – attitude. A positive attitude can do so much. Not only do you generally feel happier, your eyes are wide open to be able to see something that can make things happen…opportunities! For most of us, life is an upward battle and opportunities can take us to the next level.
Without a positive attitude, your head might be held low and opportunities can pass you by. When I was out of work and searching for employment, our credit cards were only a few hundred dollars away from being maxed out. I briefly lapsed into a depression because I didn’t know what to do because we were running out of borrowed money to live on.
During the time I was depressed, I wasn’t looking for work. Opportunities were passing me by and all I could do is basically feel sorry for our situation. I did snap out of it and I knew that if things were going to happen for us – I had to make it happen. I had to hold my head up high and believe in myself. Believe in my love for my family. Believe in my desire and power to make our life better.
I don’t think luck had anything to do with what happened in our situation. I believe it all had to do with a positive attitude and believing in ourselves. That’s something that we all have the ability to do and we all have the ability to be in the right place at the right time and make things happen.

“Luck” has two distinct meanings. The first has to do with seemingly random events such as the roll of a dice or the drawing of a winning lottery ticket. In this sense there is such as thing as luck. Random walk theory suggests that randomness plays a significant part in the determination of returns on investments in individual stocks.
The second meaning is to do with good things happening such as good fortune. In this area I agree with you, life has a lot less to do with random chance than does other factors such as attitude or effort. Look at it this way, if we do not believe in ourselves and try and make things happen, they almost certainly won’t. A little belief and some effort will give us the opportunity and willingness to take advantage of what life has to offer.

After I hit “publish” I thought about gambling. Yeah, I guess that sort of falls under luck but then again you are sort of in the right place at the right time. I’m not sure I’d want to encourage opportunity here because that means “If you don’t play you can’t win” and really the odds are soooo against a player.
